Kokedama is a creative Japanese plant-growing art. Kokedama is shaped like a ball of soil wrapped in moss, with a bonsai tree growing on top. The tree’s roots are wrapped in soil and moss, with the outermost layer consisting of moss and braided twine, forming a moss ball (dama means ball, and koke means moss).

Kokedama breaks the traditional bonsai rule that plants must be in pots. Kokedama is often displayed on a plate, combined with wooden or ceramic objects, or hung indoors or in shaded areas.
